Berkane

Located in the north east part of Morocco, the rustic city of Berkane is part of the region of Thrifa.

Bounded by the scenic Mediterranean Seas to the north, with the border to country of Algeria and Oujda to the east and the regions of Nador and Taouririt to the southwest, the city is gifted with fertile lands and calm climate that has made it the capital for citrus fruit production in the country.

Many fragrant orange trees are found in the groves, with fruit hanging off the branches. Fruit vendors can be seen along the main roads sharing their freshest pick to the thirsty travelers and locals wishing to sample Berkane’s natural bounty. In fact, the season of May brings the harvest moussem (festival) of clementines on the Arabic calendar.

A known market town with a fairly affluent local community, the city was built by the French as part of the protectorate, and today is an example of a bustling Moroccan town. Guest are invited to sample its famed local wines over a meal with tfaya (chicken) couscous, the staple in Morocco.

A well-known prehistoric site in the city is located in Taforalt, Beni Snassen. It is also the birthplace of two-time Olympic Gold champion and world record-holding runner Hicham El Guerrouj known as “The King of the Mile.”

As part of the country’s direction for development in 2010, shopping malls, conference centres, beach clubs and new marinas alongside a planned airport expansion including a new airport in Tetouan are part of the upcoming plans for Berkane.
