Marrakech

Known as the “Red City” or “Al Hamra,” the city of Marrakech to the southwest of Morocca is a glorious place of fantasy and splendor that lays in way at the foot of the Atlas Mountains.

The town of Marrakech is the second largest city in the country, and has gems for the traveller, particularly in the Medina, or the historical city.

The large square in the heart of the city is called Djemma El Fna, that is the highlight to any night. Here a bevy of comedians, musicians, dancers, acrobats and storytellers create a symphnony of drum beats and excited shouts to tell amazing stories and feats of daring and adventure. Nearby there are stalls of Moroccan food waiting to be sampled, as the whiffs of its spices—cardamom, onion, corriander fill your nostrils.

Just near the Place Jame El Fna are the souks, the marketplaces of Marrakech. Bargaining is the order of the day for a dizzying array of shoes, kaftans, tangerines, spices and brassware.
Adjacent to the square is the Koutoubia mosque, whose minaret is a famed architectural marvel, akin to that of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France.

A calm and tranquil respite from the hustle and bustle in the city center, the Majorelle Gardens contains flora from across the globe. It even houses a Museum of Islamic Art for the artistically inclined visitor. Those wanting to see the crafts of the area are invited to the Musee Dar si Said as it houses many different artifacts such as wood carvings, musical instruments and weapons.

For more relaxation, threat yourself a hammam, where a massage is the order of the day. Yoga is also encouraged as the city is the center for the practice in the country.
